As women in our community struggle both financially and with proper health care, The Teddy Bear Den is committed to encouraging each and every one of them to lead healthy lifestyles. Since June of 1996 the Den has served over 12,000 limited income pregnant women and their infants, providing referrals, education and incentives, assisting them with property health care.
Mothers enrolled in the Den earn points or "Teddy Credits" by attending health care provider appointments, not smoking or using drugs and utilizing other agencies in our community such as Mentor Mom or Bright Start. Participants continue to earn points until their child is fifteen months old being rewarded for attending well baby checkups and immunizations up to fifteen months of age. Participants can then use those points in the Teddy Bear Den to buy basic necessities for mothers - clothing, diapers, highchairs, strollers, and most importantly, cribs and mattresses. The Den is also on a mission to provide all of our participants in need of safe sleep for their child a new crib in exchange for their healthy lifestyle points.
Since the Teddy Bear Den launch of safe sleep, hundreds of cribs have been "purchased" by our participants with their "Teddy Credits". We are proud to say the Den is promoting safe sleep for our babies and working hands on to keep this at the top of our list of priorities for 2014. Convincing our participants NOT to sleep with their children has been difficult. Despite the easiness of sleeping with your child, the Consumer Product Safety Commission warns parents not to place their infants in an adult bed, therefore reducing the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Bed sharing is extremely common for our participants because they are unable to afford to financially purchase a crib and mattress in a retail store. We regularly share information with our ladies letting them know that sleeping with their child puts their babies at risk of suffocation and strangulation.
The Teddy Bear Den is proud to kick off The Safe Sleep Campaign and team up with John Schutte of Farm and Home Real Estate. As a realtor, John sees first-hand the families looking for appropriate homes and bedrooms for their children and John jumped on board with The Safe Sleep Campaign. Each home that John lists in the upcoming months, he will provide a crib and mattress for one of our participants. If you list your home with John YOU will not be the only one that will sleep well tonight!
